Situated in the Eastern Caribbean, the tiny island of St. Maarten (also spelled St. Martin as it’s owned by both the Dutch and the French) has one of the most spectacular terrains in the world, as it manages to combine rustic and romantic beauty with a modern day bustling society. Combine that with all the fun activities the island offers for couples, and you have yourself a romantic getaway in paradise.

The island of St. Maarten lies just Southeast of Puerto Rico and covers just 37 square miles of land. As it is inhabited by different governments, the benefits of having two European cultures living right next to one another are abundant. One can see this when looking at the large directory of fine restaurants, small cafés, bistros and nightclubs that are available all over the island. Due to the large population of immigrants from France, the Netherlands and other parts of Europe and North America, St. Maarten also knows how to translate words like ‘love’ and ‘romance’ into many different languages.beach

Along with the cuisine, St. Maarten has been known to have some of the best resorts in the Caribbean. One such resort is the Sonesta Maho Beach Resort & Casino, located on the Dutch side of the island and taking up what would be the equivalent of a few city blocks. Couples can sit by the enormous swimming pool, complete with an overhead bridge and enjoy the private beach about a hundred feet away. On the second floor of the hotel is a spectacular spa waiting to pamper you before you head out for a night on the town.
