Antigua is situated in a sweeping highland valley, suspended between the cones of Agua, Acatenango and Fuego volcanoes. In 1773 two severe earthquakes shook the city damaging many of the churches and residential buildings. Much of this damage has not been repaired.

Antigua was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. The beauty of the city is its cobbled stoned streets and grand Baroque-style colonial buildings. Later city officials adopted sanctioned color schemes to restore the city back to its original grand appearance.

Antigua has an unhurried and enjoyable ambiance. After a few days of drinking coffee and munching cake, you almost forget you are in Central America .
