The man I’m dating asked me to find a place in Kennebunkport, ME for a romantic weekend getaway. I’d put off finding a place for four days and then suddenly, it was the night before and I’d already had two martinis. So, I literally stumbled around on my computer and tried to spell “Kennebunkport” correctly for about five minutes when finally I clicked on something that took me to somewhere that led me to the Captain Fairfield Inn.

It was in Kennebunkport, the prices were reasonable, and they had availability for the following night. Perfect… Wait, breakfast was included? Awesome! It looked soft and stylish, not kitschy; and each room had its own name, names like Polly Lord and Brig MacDonough, which, after two martinis, are all hilarious. Regardless, the reservations were booked.

We showed up the next day not really knowing what to expect. What we found was heaven.

First, the Captain Fairfield Inn is located on Pleasant Street, which is in a quiet neighborhood in the heart of Kennebunkport. It overlooks the river green and is surrounded by centuries-old Elms and Maples.

The Innkeepers, Finn and Loryn are a young, adorable couple with an enormous dog. When you arrive at their Inn, they seem genuinely happy to see you. You’ve never seen adults get more excited about warm homemade cookies.

There are only 9 rooms at the Inn, so it does fill up fast, especially in the summer. Room rates range from $146.00 to $381.00 per room per night, depending on the room and the season. If you go during their “Quiet Season” (the winter months) you can get a phenomenal deal.

All the rooms feature luxury Frette bed linens, private baths, flat screen TV/DVDs, AC, and Wi-Fi. Some rooms include additional amenities like fireplaces, private porches, double whirlpools and rainfall showers. Our room had the rainfall shower, which I would highly recommend.

We were given a complimentary bottle of champagne that we drank by our private fireplace with leftovers from dinner. It was glorious.

In the morning, a gourmet breakfast was prepared from the freshest seasonal and local ingredients available. I had a spinach salad with strawberries and pecans, an orange mango smoothie, and a maple scone that was so big I couldn’t finish it. Lastly, there was a choice of ricotta pancakes or eggs. It was delectable, and my coffee cup never went empty.

According to their website, they are “able to offer extremely personalized concierge services”. The best example I can give of this that upon check-in, I mentioned that it might be fun to rent scooters the next day as a way to see the city. The next morning at breakfast, Finn had already called and reserved a scooter for us for that afternoon. It’s that kind of genuine thoughtfulness that sets this place apart from the rest; it’s what makes you want to go back. I want to plan another trip in the fall, when the leaves are changing. I was also told there are horse-drawn carriage rides through the village in winter.

So, if you’re just too busy to plan for a romantic weekend, you should try the Captain Fairfield Inn. From walking along the shore and through the historic quaint village, sipping champagne by a cozy fireplace, to sleeping under a down comforter and heavenly linens, you and your significant other will have nothing to complain about. And if, by chance, you feel like your relationship is missing some romance, I firmly believe you’ll find it there.
